Living Kidney Donor

Katie with Her husband

I knew Thomas needed a kidney, as he is a family friend. Being a nurse, I am well aware of the effects of dialysis on a patient and family members. I felt led to explore the option of donation and began the testing process. When I was notified that I was not a direct match I was informed there are other options. That’s when I learned about paired donation. Even though I wasn’t a match for Thomas there was still a way I could help! The UK transplant team was able to pair the 4 of us up (2 donors and 2 recipients) and we all had surgery the same day.

I knew donation was the right thing for me as I couldn’t imagine how I would feel if myself or my family member needed something and there was nothing that I could do. That feeling would be overwhelming, so why not help someone else out!
