On Sunday, December 12, 2004, my mom received THE phone call from University Hospital, “Your son has been in an altercation. You need to get here as soon as possible!” They wouldn’t give us details over the phone, but we knew it was serious. My brother had called Mom back in the summer after renewing his KY driver’s license, to let her know he had signed up on the Organ Donor Registry. “Mom, if anything happens, donate.” On December 14, he passed away. He had been shot in the back of the head. Mom and Erich being the unselfish people they are, donated his organs. We received a letter from the Donor Network a couple of weeks later about the families he was able to save from our heartbreak. Two weeks after his birthday, and one week before Christmas, Erich had saved 6 people. he had always been our angel, now he’s an angel for 6 more families. As hard as it has been dealing with losing him, we have to smile because we know there are families out there celebrating the life given to them so unselfishly. And for that…we are thankful.
